C60 was discovered in 1982, but has existed in nature since the birth of the universe. It can be found in common candle soot and any deposit of carbonaceous material. C60 is also known as carbon 60, C60, fullerene, buckminsterfullerene, and buckyballs. It is composed entirely of carbon; 60 carbon atoms, bonded to each other in the shape of a soccer ball. It was named in honor of Buckminster Fuller, the inventor of the geodesic dome, because it has a geodesic structure. The 60 carbon atoms are bonded to each other with alternating double and single bonds; 30 double bonds and 20 single bonds in all. C60 neutralizes free radicals by donating up to 24 electrons per C60 molecule. In addition, each C60 molecule can accept up to 6 protons which enter and become trapped inside the hollow carbon cage and cannot escape, allowing C60 to act as a free radical sponge irreversibly neutralizing free radical molecules
